I have been on a little bit of a hiatus which has included some seriously busy work days and also a few Netflix-binge days (I am all about that balance). But I am back with a new round-up! I have been getting in touch with the trends out there and have come across one that I can totally get on board with. It is all about Scalloped Detailing when it comes to home decor, interior design and personal style. This trend is absolutely everywhere! What I love about it is that it can be done in a very contemporary way as well as how we classically know the pattern.
We are seeing scalloped detail in patterns, in hemlines, and in overall design. No longer does a scalloped edge have to feel cutesy or outdated. Now it is being applied in a much stronger and statement-worthy fashion. For instance above we have a staple item, the area rug. This West Elm Scallop Wool Rug showcases strong curved lines which boasts modern flair. It is a statement piece without being overly bold and while still maintaining practicality for a living space. Then we have the Lotus wall covering by Farrow and Ball. It is a personal favourite of mine (So stunning am I right!?). It adds some tropical pattern to a space with its leaflike pattern but also maintains a classic pattern repeat that can be seen in a scalloped design. These wall coverings are seriously luxurious with there beautiful texture and rich colours (I am so in love!).
Then we have the traditional take on scalloped details and thats with simple edging or hems. I will always love this since it adds some subtle yet feminine style. These appetizer plates by Rosanna are so fun with the edging and metallic detail (I am such a sucker for gold detailing). These would make such a great addition for entertaining serve ware. I have collected some more of my favourite Scalloped products below. Follow the links to shop your favourites!
Adding this trend into the home and into your wardrobe will definitely keep you on trend and have you owning it style-wise (slayyyy). The scalloped detail trend is so fun and allows you to play with pattern and texture in a whole new way. Try it out this season and let’s keep this trend going!
We are officially into June and I have to say I am so happy that Summer is almost here! (This humid weather has me feeling like its late July but nonetheless). With Summer time coming in hot (quite literally. See what I did there) I thought it was the perfect time to do another round up of my favourite Poolside Essentials. I am feeling in a bit of pool withdrawal since ours had a huge tear in the liner when we went to open it and now its a waiting game to get it fixed (I am taking any and all invitations for those who have a pool). In this week’s product round up I am featuring some of my go-to items for lounging poolside, whether that be in my own backyard, at a friends or if I am extra lucky and at the beach.
What is essential in my book: An oversized tote is a must. I tend to overpack even when its just going to my backyard. Toss a few magazines, a book, a bevvie and whatever other miscellaneous goodies I may want (no one wants to have to run back inside to grab the latest issue of People Magazine so may as well grab everything you need beforehand).
While lathering up in SPF is insanely important I am one of those people that has that same thought every year that all I need is that 1% Tanning Oil and I burn to s$&t. So for the sake of being safe and protecting our skin lets all not forget this part of living poolside. I will always be a body oil fan and it is on my list of essentials. The Lucy B’s Apothecary and Josie Maran brands are amongst my favourites. They both smell amazing, bronze the skin slightly (you won’t be orange I promise) and moisturize the skin. I throw that stuff in my hair too because it too gets dried out and damaged from the sun (show those locks some love).
Bathsuits are an obvious choice (unless you prefer skinny dipping. No judgement here) and I am all about the one-pieces this year. As a curvy girl finding the right swimsuit is always a challenge. I love highwaisted bottoms (I have basic black) and mixing in new tops. I have included some highly rated one pieces in my list that not only am I purchasing for the Summer but are flattering on any shape. I also like to have a few options of cove-rups on hand. I have 3 styles that are my essentials. 1. The Romper (I could permanently live in my Wilfrid Free romper) 2. The Beach Goddess Dress (this can be so many looks but when wearing such cover-up you will feel like you could be on a Victorias Secret Swimsuit Catalog cover) 3. The Low-Key Poncho (all hail the poncho).
My last essentials are your favourite sunnies (I am loving the half cat-eye trend), a cute towel (I need a round turkish towel in my life this summer. They scream photo-op) and a fun pool floaty (the wackier the better). Check out my roundup of Summer Essentials for Poolside living below!
Happy Shopping and let’s enjoy some serious poolside living shall we!?
It is almost Mother’s Day (May 8th in case you forgot) and that means celebrating the women in our lives that do so much for us. My mom has been and will always be my biggest support and my best friend (thanks Mom xoxo). I like to think I am always an easy daughter (but let’s be real here). So for all those days that I am a little too stubborn, impatient or seriously woke up on the wrong side of the bed, Mother’s Day comes along for me to show my appreciation and serious love for all that my Mom does (my Mom is seriously superwoman!).
For today’s post I have put together my Gift Guide for the perfect Mother’s Day present. What makes this gift guide so special you ask? Well all the gifts in this list are Made in Canada. In my previous job I had the pleasure of sourcing beautiful Canadian made products for our shelves so many of these products I know quite well as well as the people who make them. I love supporting not only locally made goods but also brands that represent this great country!
My list of Mother’s Day Made in Canada Gifts includes pretty jewellery, home goods and pantry staples for serving up a tasty brunch (the Blonde Drip Maple Syrup is absolutely delicious). There are beautiful scents featured in the bath and body guide (I have personally tried and continue to use many of the products on the list and they are amazing!). Lastly we have gifts for the Modern Mom who is on the go. Check out the Gift Guide in the links below!

It is the 6th and final day of Union Grove Design’s Spring Style Series and just in time for Easter Weekend (I’ll take all the Mini Eggs please:)!). Today I am brightening things up with the “Colourful Couture” look. This is all about a punch of colour (or a few). The focus is on four colours specifically. Electric Blue, Emerald Green, Bold Red and Canary Yellow. Mixing these colours makes for a highly saturated outfit, perfect for those Sunny Spring days (or Tropical dreaming). This trend was inspired by the upcoming Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (Go for Gold y’all).
What to look for when shopping this trend: High saturation and bold hues. Shop Red, Green and Blue with touches of Yellow. Layer these colours together but be strategic. Choose one or two complimenting hues for your outfit and use bold pops of another colour to add extra interest. This look in influenced by athletic wear but does not have to mean tracksuits. It means more casual. Shop easy maxi or midi dresses, roomy tote bags and playful yet functional accessories. This is a style meant to take you throughout your busy day whether you are on the run or enjoying a patio somewhere (I’ll take this option please). Lastly get a little bit of a tropical influence with the patterns you choose. Go for palm leaves, florals or tie dye.
Have a look through my “Colourful Couture” picks for the season and get to shopping!
Note*- The top two Bargain Buys for this look are the Rivero Top by Wilfrid Free in electric blue and the Adidas Adilette Slides, both under $40. My top two Splurges are the Tracee Crossover Halter Top form ShopBop and the York Small Leather Tote, by Tory Burch, in Yellow.

Day 5: Fierce Female
Thank you for following the Spring Style Series here on Union Grove Design! Happy shopping and wishing everyone a Happy Easter and long weekend:)!
I can’t believe it is already Day 5 of the Spring Style Series and we are almost through all of the trends of the season (5 Down, 1 more to go. Stay with me everyone!). Today’s trend I like to call “Fierce Female”. It is my take on the cyber punk trend for Spring, which I have toned down to make it what I think is a little more accessible. I think this is a great style to let your inner fierceness out (Queen Bey Y’all) and show that you mean business. Since I have put my own spin on this trend it makes a great look for a modern professional to wear to work (Throw away boring pantsuits. I just can’t with them!) but can also be done for a sexy night out outfit.
What to look for when shopping this trend: Black is the ultimate tone for this look. Utilize rich fabrics, such as leather, and unique textures, such as mesh. Leather is the big player of this trend so layering a leather top with a fringed leather skirt is a 100% YES! This trend calls for silver foil textures and lots of metallic shine with accessories. I incorporated a little more gold into this look to soften it a bit and make it a little less futuristic (No silver spacesuits here). Mixing metallics is a great way to incorporate small touches of silver without investing too heavily on it in your outfit. Try a silver clutch or foiled espadrilles (Refer to my picks below!). The fit for this style will be slim and tailored (Because of all the leather). Look for A-line skirts and biker style jackets and pants. This is an ultra modern look so don’t be afraid to mix in some unique accessories from head-to-toe!
Have a peek through my picks for the “Fierce Female” Spring Style Trend!
Note*- Everything in this post is under $75 except for my one splurge pick, the Leather Dress by Mango (A great investment piece). This makes for happy bargain shopping this Spring!

Day 1: Garden Girl
Day 2: Modern Bohemian
Day 3: Contemporary Chic
Day 4: Girl Boss
Check back in tomorrow for our final Spring Trend and plus it will be Friday (Aw Hell Yeah!)
Since we are halfway through the work week there is no better time to feature the next trend for Spring Style, “Girl Boss” (Great book if you haven’t yet read it!). When it comes to professional attire for Spring it is very bold and sophisticated. I love a good high contrast pairing and a strong pop of colour, which is what this look is all about. The three colour ways of this trend are black, white and red. All three create strong looks on their own and are even stronger when paired together. I find it so important to dress for success and this trend is one that will scream “I am GirlBoss hear me roar!”.
What to look for when shopping this trend: You want to seek out jet blacks, stark whites and bold reds. These will give you the high contrast look you are going for. Go subtle with details in the outfits you put together. Choose classic LBDs and wrapped skirts. Sheer blouses and tailored jackets are your best friends. Use these to create a balanced look. The fit you are looking for is a modern take on traditional business casual. Slim-fit pants, loose blouses and midi-length tailored skirts. If you go a little bit more modern with your look try Culottes pants with a body-skimming blouse. You want to feature red in an unlikely way (It doesn’t have to be just red lipstick). Look for red accessories or try a head-to-toe red outfit. Shop classic accessories such as structured handbags, contemporary watches and add in some bling as well!
Once again I have put together a collection of my favourite pieces for this Spring Style Trend to make for easy shopping (Aw Brit you shouldn’t have!).
Note*: My Bargain finds include the Black Culottes and White Frilly Top, both from Zara, as well as the Black Leather Block Heels from Forever 21. These are all under $50.00! My top splurge find is Beige Wrapped Suede Skirt but this would be a great piece to use for multiple seasons!
If you missed the first 3 days of the Spring Style Series have a peek at them and follow the links below:
Day 1: Garden Girl
Day 2: Modern Bohemian
Day 3: Contemporary Chic
Check back tomorrow for Spring Style Trend #5!
It is Day 3 of the Spring Style Series and if you missed the last two trends they were Modern Bohemian and Garden Girl (Both very cute and very fresh for Spring) You should most definitely check them out! Today’s trend I am calling “Contemporary Chic”. It is one of my favourites for the season because it features a very soft and delicate colour palette and flowing fabrics (makes for easy styling). It has a very modern flair with lots of straight lines, boxy shapes and geometric inspiration. This is where we get the “contemporary” in the trend but it is softened by the hues and warm metallics. This is a look that you can easily take from the office to evening cocktails (Happy Hour!).
What to look for when shopping this trend: Look for roomy pants, such as Palazzos, flowing dresses, such as slips, and loose blouses. Find slimmer fits with tailored jackets, blazers and cinched waists. This is a carefree yet professional look, so keep it subtle but structured. Go slightly oversized with your outerwear. Look for white, cream and a spectrum of soft pink hues. Shop luxurious and feminine fabrics, such as silk and velvet. Imagine wearing the most luxurious and fabulous sleepwear as day wear (Awesome!). Accessorize with dainty and geometric inspired jewelry. Layer on similar toned handbags and footwear to complete the look.
Add some of my picks below to your update your wardrobe with this trend now!
Note*- The bargain buys picked for this trend include the Stella and Dot Pave Triangle Ear Climbers, The Olive and Piper Pave X Ring and The Crossbody Bag by Zara. All these items are under $50 (Score!). The top splurge item is the Linen Coat by Mango. It is simply stunning with its lightweight texture and simple design, perfect for completing the Contemporary Chic look!
There you have it! The extremely versatile Contemporary Chic trend for Spring. This will definitely be a go-to look for me this season (Those heels by Anthropologie <3<3). Happy Spring shopping everyone and check back in tomorrow for trend #4!
Now that we are officially in Spring (As of yesterday. My unintentional planning of this series was on point!) we can get really get into this style series. The second trend of the season is “Modern Bohemian”. Take everything you know of boho style and turn up the volume (The more eclectic the better). You want to mix prints, whether the piece you choose is a collection of prints or you layer together items yourself. I chose to select items from my wardrobe that brought together colour, texture and print! Put them together and you have a carefree look for Saturday afternoon! (Let’s pretend it isn’t Monday)
What to look for when shopping this trend: Seek out global prints. Choose bold patterns that inspire you of places you have been or want to go. Don’t be afraid to piece together bold items. This trend is about expressing your individuality (So go for it!). Play with texture. Layer different fabrics. Play with colour. Pair together bright yet complimentary hues. Try woven accessories, fringe, pompoms. Keep the fit loose and flowy but still maintain shape to your look (Show off your natural silhouette). Bohemian style is in the details and mixing them together. Lastly go for statement jewellery that features natural textures and cultural inspired patterns.
Here are my picks for the “Modern Bohemian” trend that can be found in stores and online now!
Note*- All of the items in this list are under $75 with a couple of splurge exceptions (I had to include a couple). The Vieques Shift Dress with pleating detail is such a fun look with its colour blocking and soft textures. It comes in at just over $150 (So still manageable). My top splurge pick is the Luxe Sunglasses by Linda Farrow. Their oversized style has a cool, retro style with their modern rose hue and ultra-thin frame. These ring in at just under $800 (excuse me while double check that I am seeing that right…crap I am).
The Modern Bohemian trend is one that transitions extremely well into the Summer. So treat yourself to a splurge item or buy a few bargain accessories, they will take you through the next couple of seasons and give you seriously cool style!
With Easter coming up next weekend I thought of no better time then now to do my Annual Spring Style Series! (Let’s get that cold weather out of here and bring on the Spring blooms. Am I right?!) My favourite issues of InStyle Magazine are always the Fall and Spring fashion guides and this year’s Spring fashion issue was packed with upcoming trends for the season that will freshen up your wardrobe.
The first trend to watch out for I have called “Garden Girl”. It is inspired by floral prints, soft hues and feminine silhouettes. This is a staple look for Spring time and is a style that I personally love!
What to look for when shopping this style: Soft colour palettes such as creams, whites, neutrals and pinks. (This is where all that Rose Quartz shopping will really come in handy). Keep an eye out for traditional silhouettes with skirts and dresses such as A-Line and tea length. (This style should make you feel like the most elegant extra on Downtown Abbey). Don’t be afraid of floral prints, all are welcome here! Choose delicate and flowing fabrics, such as silk. Lastly this look in completed by the details that make it sweet and timeless, bows and ruffles.
The “Garden Girl” Trend is all about classic elegance. All of the pieces shown above were pulled form my existing wardrobe and jewelry box so dig through your closet to find pieces you can dust off for this look. If you are loving this Spring Style Trend I have picked some of my favourite pieces from my go-to stores that make shopping this look easy-peezy.
Note*- All the pieces on here are under $100 except the Two Tone Necklace and the Lace-up Flats. These are a little bit of a splurge (especially the shoes) but sometimes you just have to treat yourself! (Or dream!)
Stay posted for more Spring Style Trends as we countdown to Easter weekend and of course beautiful Spring weather! (Yes it is Sunday today but I am always looking ahead to future weekend living. TGIF always!)
Styling a Midi Dress
The midi dress has become a go-to style over the past year, but as a curvy lady I was skeptical. Not only do I have an hour glass shape but I am short, so I did not think a midi dress was something I would be able to pull off without it making me look shorter and wider. Not only was I wrong but it turns out I have been missing out on wearing some seriously stylish outfits (Note to self: Always try something on before you decide if you can or cannot pull it off!). I truly think this is a silhouette that anyone can wear, it is all about how you style it. It is a style that can provide you with more coverage if you are wanting to wear something flirty and feminine without showing too much skin.
I found two amazing midi dresses from Forever 21+ that I will be able to wear all year round. They are extremely versatile because they are basics and allow for unlimited styling potential. These are items to stock up on in your wardrobe! (And you really can’t go wrong when they are under $40!). You can find similar styles to these in the other Forever 21 sections as well!
The first dress is the Funnel Neck Midi. It is great for the colder months since the knit is mid weight. It is stretchy, which is appealing on a comfort level, but this fabric allows you to show off your curves in an ultra flattering way (Flaunt it!).
I chose to style this dress for a night out look. I layered over a sleeveless plaid duster (I love any and all dusters) to add a little bit more coverage (It is a Canadian Winter after all) and some hipster style. I am the furthest thing from a hipster but I seriously feel like I should be wearing fake glasses and eating Sriracha when I wear this duster.
Make it a little bit glam with some statement jewellery. I chose a beautiful gold Lariat (The Bianca) by Stella and Dot. This outfit will keep you feeling covered when you are outdoors in the cold but will breathe when you are indoors in the warm (I am all about balance). With this look I would opt for a black ankle bootie with a heel. Something that is chic but can stand up in the snow. The Grandiose boot by Stuart Weitzman has a thicker heel and fully covers the foot (perfect for trekking through a snow bank. Okay not exactly, but I tend to go for style over practicality.) When Spring comes I would choose a boot with an open toe, such as the Ulycia bootie from Aldo. Both boots add to the chic and edgy look I am going for with this outfit.
Now I typically don’t post photos of me wearing the outfits I discuss on Union Grove because I am not trying to be a model, I just love talking fashion. But to show that I practise what I preach, here is a photo that proves I wore this exact outfit. (I definitely said I wasn’t trying to be a model, but this face I am doing says otherwise. I was just feeling really good in this outfit!).
The second midi dress is the Tank Midi. I went with the Charcoal colour but you can also shop four other colours including Navy, Black and a beautiful Rose Pink. Once again it is a form fitting dress, which I would recommend with the style choices I am giving. I love to layer so choosing a base layer that shows my curves is essential (I am not trying to hide my body but highlight it in a flattering way.)
I went with a daytime look for this dress. I layered over a flowy top in a creamy white colour. I chose to tie it to accentuate the waist since I have also layered on a military style vest. It drapes the body as well so tying the white top is a way to not have too many loose layers competing with each other.
I like the combination of these neutral and earthy tones as well as playing with different types and layers of fabrics. I cannot wait to wear this outfit when the weather isn’t quite so chilly (let’s be real it is downright frigid outside!). What makes layering like this so great is that you could take off the vest to have a flirty tied top over your midi dress. You could untie it and sport an open blouse over the tank dress for a more casual look as well.
With this outfit I chose three shoe types that transform this outfit into three completely different looks. If you are going casual-cool I would choose a sneaker such as the Naywen shoe from Aldo. It would complete the low-key look of a tank dress and tied blouse, perfect for just running around.
If you are wanting to make a statement with this outfit and dress it up a bit for a date or you just want to feel fierce I would go with the Cutout Lace-Up Sandals from Forever 21. Pairing the bright fuchsia pink with the dark charcoal grey and earthy olive green is unexpected and will up the chic factor of this outfit. I would go bold and glam with the accessorizing for this look.
The third option is a very classic look. The Mimosa (Yum!) boot from Brown’s Shoes brings a structured element to this outfit and plays well with the neutral tones. It completes the casualness of the look while still looking put together and sophisticated. I would accessorize with a classic watch and structured handbag.
Midi dresses are going to be my go-to outfits for the rest of the Winter and throughout the Spring. Dressing them up or down is so simple and so fun! I have been able to pull things from my wardrobe that I have not worn in a long time because they work so well over these dresses. You can find so many great midi dress options out there (for any shape and size) that can be worn as a basic or styled into countless great looks.
Cheers to the Midi Dress!
Shop It: Rose Quartz
If you read my last post on Pantone’s colour of the year, Rose Quartz, then you know how much I am loving it! It can be used in very traditional ways to add a feminine and soft touch to a space but also can be added to an ultra modern space to balance out a contemporary look. Whether you are looking to add some Rose Quartz to your home or your wardrobe I have compiled some of my favourite pieces in this trendy colour.
Note: Don’t be alarmed, but there are some serious splurge items on this list (I must have expensive taste). But there are some really affordable and lovely options on this list too if you are on a budget, and sometimes DIY projects are your best friend when it comes to getting chic inspired decor into your home. I never shy away from a good DIY!
Coco Chanel Mademoiselle Perfume – Nothing says style better then Chanel and this little bottle of luxury is an easy way to add some rose colour to your bathroom or bedroom. (It is also an incredibly beautiful scent so that makes it extra amazing!)
Montauk Throw – I have a serious weakness when it comes to throws. I firmly believe you cannot have too many (unless you find yourself immersed in throws then maybe it is time to get rid of a few). This Montauk throw is the perfect one to layer in some serious comfort and style power to your living room.
Mineral Slab Table Lamp – The most expensive item on my list goes to this baby! The Mineral Slab Table Lamp rings in a price tag of just over $2600 USD. I don’t think I will ever be able to afford this (but a girl can dream right?) but it is a seriously stunning decor piece. You cannot deny the beauty of this natural rose quartz slab that has been finished into the base of a table lamp. Pair it with some gold finishing and a classic white shade and you have a statement accessory that will never go out of style (with a price tag like that you will make sure it doesn’t!).
Moroccan Leather Pouf – No matter what the colour was for the year a Moroccan Pouf was going to end up on this list. I am obsessed with them and need one in my life ASAP! The detail of these poufs is beautiful and they can be used as ottomans or added seating (they are decor pieces as well in my opinion). You can get them in a wide range of colours but the punch that the pink pouf would give to a space would be very unique (and very fun!).
Chez Elle Creme de la Creme Tray – Rosanna makes so many lovely little gifts and trinkets for the home that are affordable and very chic. One of my favourites is the Creme de la Creme tray in the Chez Elle collection. It is perfect for setting on your nightstand and resting your jewelry on. Gift this cute tray and don’t forget to get one for yourself as well!
Billie Sofa – When I came across this sofa I could not get over how awesome it would look in a modern space. The design of it screams contemporary and the rose colour makes it so appealing on a whole other level. It has a soft hue that would not overpower a space yet enough of the rose colour to draw your eye to it. It is very rare to find a furnishing that is both a statement and a classic piece, but this has managed to do that! (You Go West Elm!).
Blush Hue Dishware – This collection of dishes from Crate and Barrel comes in a variety of beautiful colours and the pastel blush selection is simply stunning. The design is simplistic and very traditional which makes layering them with classic white dishes very easy. Surprise your guests with some unique serving pieces at your next dinner party!
Roar & Rabbit Swivel Chair – West Elm has done it again with this swivel chair. It’s trendy blush hue, pleated sides and velvet fabric make it an ultimate focal point for a room. It would make a lovely chair in a study, in a living room or in a master suite (I would be selfish and keep this beauty all to myself!). I have nothing but heart eye emojis for this chair.
Voluspa Bella Sucre Jar Candle – This sweet candle has hints of sugar and coconut and comes in a beautifully embossed jar. You can find the Voluspa collection at any Indigo store and if you are like me you frequent Chapters often. A pretty candle is another easy way to add some colour with your decor into the home and can be very cost effective.
Dior Incognito Nail Lacquer – This long lasting polish comes in some seriously stylish colours but if you are looking for some Rose Quartz try Incognito. It is a lovely blush pink colour that has depth and richness to it. If you are wanting to do a pretty colour without going too bright or flashy then this is the polish to try.
Acrylic Rose Quartz Bookends – Okay deep breaths on this one. These bookends are heavy hitters in the cost department but their beauty is undeniable. Once again we see the natural pieces of quartz that have been defined on their edges with the gilded gold. They are positioned on the acrylic bookends which help to balance the contemporary with natural design. Very chic!
Chloe Drew Shoulder Bag – I have been eyeing this bag for quite some time and it just so happens to be in the right hue for 2016! This shoulder bag is in cement pink and functions as a neutral so it could be paired with any outfit. I am all for versatile bags and this would make a great one for this year (and next!).
These are just some of my Rose Quartz favourites but there are literally a million rosy things out there to shop for the home or for yourself! Start browsing those boutiques and online shops and get to shopping!
All About Aubergine
My favourite colour for wearing this Fall is Aubergine. It has such a rich and bold quality that pops very well against other bold hues as well as pairs perfectly with the neutral tones. Here are some of my pieces for Fall and how to wear this Fall’s fashion trends with the Aubergine colour scheme.
Aubergine and Navy Blue
1. Everyday Embellishment
I have always been a fan for embellished clothing and it is back again for the Fall! We are seeing a lot of jewelled collared blouses, embellished sweaters and gem accents across the bib. Wearing this trend is great for the office as well as for casual looks. I went with casual. I took a pair of Aubergine jean leggings from the Gap and paired it with a navy sweater also from the Gap. The sweater is a simple cotton with simple metallic embellishments. Navy blue is a classic colour combination with Aubergine that functions almost as a neutral pairing. Pair this outfit with a chic tan bootie. I would wear these from Nine West, which is a style we are seeing a lot of this season.
Aubergine and Orange
2. For the Office
This is an outfit that would work very well in the workplace. It pairs the Aubergine purple with orange. This combination screams Autumn to me since these two colours on their own are classic to the season. Long skirts are an essential item for Fall so I paired a hi-lo pleated skirt in a burnt orange colour, from Target, with a beautiful peplum blouse from Aritzia. The materials of both the skirt and the blouse complement very nicely because they have an airy and feminine quality to them. Pair a chunky heel with this look, such as these black booties from Nine West!
Aubergine and Blush
3. Pretty in Purple
An unexpected colour combination with Aubergine is a blush pink. Pairing a pastel pink with a bold purple doesn’t seem like it would work but it does and it does really well!. This look would be perfect for day to night. I put a drape style long-sleeved top with a peplum bottom, from Aritzia, and layered over a blush blazer, from Kohls. Wear this with a slim fit dark jean and a pair of suede wedges. I would wear these from Nine West which have cool buckles along the side. Wedges are huge for fall because they give coverage and are extremely comfortable. They are a great option instead of a flat boot.
Aubergine and Cobalt
4. Bold Colour Blocking
My last look would be the most unexpected for Fall which is always fun! The wild card pairing with Aubergine is Cobalt blue. Cobalt in an on-trend colour for Fall and pops against the bold purple unlike the other colours. It also makes the purple function as a neutral which is unexpected. I took a loose and extremely light Cobalt blouse, from Target, and put it with a purple mini. Mini skirts are popular for this Fall which I love because it gives your Summer pieces some more use. I tend to layer a dark or textured stocking underneath as well! To up the cozy factor in this outfit I layered on a chunky knit sweater in a cool grey. This outfit is the ultimate colour blocking outfit for Fall. It is definitely unexpected but incredibly cute!
What else to try for Fall…
A pair of these will always come in handy for finishing off an outfit for work and creating a cute look with a mini. This style is very on trend for Fall so it shouldn’t be difficult to find an awesome pair of these in stores.
b) Patterned Knits
I love this line from Aritzia and every Fall you can find a new selection of their patterned knits in-stores. It is the perfect piece for an Autumn walk or a weekend at the cottage!
Green is definitely something I wish I had more of in my wardrobe. I have a couple pieces, the first is a studded vest, from Target, which I always get great wear out of. It drapes really well and its perfect for layering. The other I like for Fall is the distressed and studded knit sweater, from H&M. This is oversized and the more I wear it the more distressed it looks, which is something I personally love. Bright emerald greens are big for the season so I recommend accessorizing with that hue!
d) American Classic
You will see lots of native inspired prints on the shelves for Fall as well as fur-lined denims. I thought this piece was very on-trend, it is a chambray mini with native print. It has a vintage feel to it which even new pieces in this style will tend to have.
Fall is the best season for fashion. Hands down. These are my wardrobe staples for Fall, many of which I will transition to Winter. Aubergine is my colour choice for the season and hopefully this colour crash course and trend review will help you when trying to pair your existing pieces or even when deciding on some new ones!
Little Black Dress Switch-Up For Your Next Date Night
I realized this morning that I hadn’t done a fashion post in quite some time! Since my Spring Trend Series. So todays post is about some of my latest purchases since I have been doing some shopping lately for outfits when I’m in NYC in June and for Back-To-School, which is next week for me! I will be starting my program for Interior Decorating, which I am beyond excited for!
For this post I am going to feature some date night looks that you can switch in for your usual Little Black Dress. Every woman needs an LBD, but sometimes you need a change.
All the clothing in this post was bought in the last month from J.Crew, Forever 21, Anthropologie or Zara. I got everything either on sale or it was already extremely reasonable!
First there is a slight variation on the little black dress, which is to try something with on trend features. Even with trendy parts of the dress, it will always be a staple if it remains simple and classic.
I found a dress at Forever 21 I thought would be perfect for a night out in NYC. It has mesh cutouts at the waist and a high neckline, which are popular trends at the moment. It also has a faux leather lining around the neck line and around the waist.
I love it because its sassy and feminine and makes for a great LBD!
Pair with a heel, such as these with a metallic strap for extra detail. Add glitz with your other accessories as well, adding shimmer and metallics. I paired the dress with all black accessories because I really wanted this look to use pops from the glitz of the jewellery or shine of the metallics.
If you are wanting something a little more conservative or sophisticated here are two pieces I bought. A polka dot peplum top with ruffle collar and sleeves, from Anthropologie, and structured leggings from Zara.
Pair with simple jewellery such as a thin pendant necklace, small bangle and watch. Accessorize with neutral colours, such as tan or nude, for your shoe, such as these Cole Haan pumps, and a leather clutch, This one is from Nine West.
This is still feminine and sexy but has more coverage. This is an easy date night look that can be used for a more casual night out where a LBD may be too formal.
My wild card look involves a beaded flawy short and a structured viscose cropped sweater.
I fell in love with these shorts when I spotted them at Forever 21 because they were dressier then a plain black short and with flowy shorts they can also appear as a skirt, but allow you more coverage.
I found the cropped sweater from Zara, I was drawn to it because it was different from anything I have in my closet but would work well with so many things I have. I layered a mint blouse underneath for some colour.
The embellished collar on the sweater will act as a necklace so you don’t need to worry about pairing one when wearing this. Add a fierce heel, a trendy clutch, such as this woven envelope clutch, and a bangle. Don’t overdo the accessorizing since the shorts and the sweater are already embellished!
My last LBD switch up for a date night is more beach inspired. If you are on vacation or lucky enough to have a beach nearby this outfit is a fun option!
I found an African print maxi skirt form Forever 21 and a mint crop top from Zara. Paired together they make a low-key and fun outfit for a date night.
Pair this outfit with a casual flat sandal, such as these from Tory Burch, and a fun purse, such as this colour blocked one form Frederic. For accessories I used a gold bangle and a shell layered necklace to complement the beachy look.
All of the jewellery in this post, except for the watch which is Micheal Kors, is from Stella and Dot.
Updating a staple LBD or introducing new options to your wardrobe for night out looks doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. I like how these looks can all be worn for a date or night on the town but are all so different. They take different types of pieces and use the same colour pallet to achieve an outfit that is fun, flirty and feminine.
Enjoy your weekends everyone!
Spring Trend Series Day 5 – Flowy Pants
For the final day of the Spring Trend Series I chose Flowy Pants. They are a good change to a clingy jegging and are more trendy then a trouser pant. They are the best of both worlds of comfort and style!
The fit of these pants is loose along the leg and tapered to the ankle. Here is how the trend was worn on the runway.
I found a pant similar is fit to the Sachin+Babi pant from Target for $24.99.
I love these pants because the print stands out but has an airiness too it that it isn’t over-the-top. Also because it blends grey, black and cream colours it functions as a neutral and can be paired with so many tops and accessories.
I put together three looks today, since it’s the last day of the series!
The first is about stylish comfort.
I paired the pants with a simple grey crew neck sweater I have from Forever 21. It has faux leather panels on the side and under the neck for a cool detail. Dressing up a crew neck is becoming more and more popular with embellishments and necklace attachments. I decided to layer over a bib necklace from J.Crew overtop to add some sparkle.
Pair simple accessories such as this Marc by Marc Jacobs cross body purse and these nude wedges from Joe Fresh for an effortlessly chic and comfy outfit.
The second way to wear these pants is to dress them down for a weekend wear look.
I paired the pants with this loose grey tee from Anthropologie. It has a pleated silk frill along the bottom around to the back where it forms a point. The shirt fits large so it hangs loosely on the body. The flowiness of the top with its delicate detail pair well with those same qualities in the pants.
I layered over a cargo style jacket to add some structure to all the loose fabrics and just tie the outfit together.
Accessorize with a long, sleek necklace, a simple leather cross body bag, this purse I got from a thrift store for under $10!, and lastly a flat sandal. Super cute and laid back.
For my third and final look I dressed up the pants to be more formal.
I chose a mint blouse with a peter pan collar. I chose mint because it is a popular colour for the upcoming Spring and Summer months. I layered over a cream blazer that is from LC Lauren Conrad’s line at Kohls. Once again this gives structure to the flowiness of the top and the pants.
I paired with classic accessories such as this cream purse that has a vintage feel, I also got this from a thrift store for under $10. The layered pearls with jewel brooch match the vintage appeal of the purse. Lastly a simple patent leather heel ties together this look.
I wanted to let the pants be the star of each outfit so I went with simple accessories and paired them with low key, but pretty, pieces.
The last thing I wanted to point out, which you may have already noticed, was all the trendy items I bought to create these Spring looks are from Target. I always find the most amazing things here and it makes trying a new trend less intimidating when its so reasonably priced!
Thanks so much for following my 5 day Spring Trend Series and soon I will have up some DIY decor items I did for the Home for the new season.
Enjoy our weekend!
Spring Trend Series Day 4 – Minimalism
Todays Spring trends are Minimalism, Black and White and Jumpsuits. I managed to find a piece from Target for $29.99 that was 3 trends in 1! Not too shabby!
The jumpsuit is a silk-like fabric with a wide leg that tapers at the ankle. It has a drawstring at the waist and two zippered pockets on the front. The black and white colouring is perfect for the Minimalist style and works well for this structured jumpsuit. It appears more as a blouse and pants as opposed to a full length printed jumpsuit.
These trends were seen in some major lines on the runway such as:
Yves Saint Laurent
I managed to find a good balance of these trends in my one jumpsuit. It can be worn as office type look or more for an evening out.
Adding a structured blazer, such as this dark grey one from Aritzia, will make the jumpsuit function more as a pant suit. Not adding too many accessories or pops of colour will keep the outfit Minimal. Pair it with a patent leather heel and you’re ready for work!
Another option is to dress the jumpsuit up!
Choose a fierce heel such as these black strapped heels from Nine West and a chunky bracelet such as this mixed metallic one from Stella and Dot (Kahlo). A simple black purse, like this leather one from Marc by Marc Jacobs, or a small clutch is a good way to keep the outfit minimal and chic.
I hope you’re all excited for Spring as much as I am! Bring on the nicer weather!
1 more day left of the Spring Trend Series!
Spring Trend Series Day 3 – Pleated Skirts
The third big trend for the Spring is Pleats! Specifically in flowy and structured skirts. Major designers such as Michael Kors presented longer pleated skirts in their Spring line and Alexander Wang showed shorter leather pleated skirts.
The first look uses a navy blue high-low hemline skirt with micro pleats and a polka dot print. This I got from Target on clearance.
I chose to pair it with pieces that would be nice for a weekend get together or a day out with friends.
I paired it with a simple soft pink tank top that has beautiful bib detailing from Aritzia. This acts as an accessory so I don’t have to layer on necklaces. A simple leather cross body purse and thin woven belt add some natural appeal. For breezier days a cardigan, such as this pretty one from Banana Republic, works well. I liked how the detail on it was similar to that on the tank and doesn’t require a lot of accessorizing. Lastly the kitten heel shoes from Nine West add a vintage flare that I love.
For the second look I chose a faux leather mini skirt also from Target on clearance.
This can be dressed up for a party or made casual with an embellished sweatshirt. I chose to incorporate another trend for Spring with my look, which is soft floral prints.
I found a wrap style top at Target for $19.99 that has a nice airiness to it and softens the edginess of the black leather mini.
The top has a high-low hemline as well making it nice to pair with leggings. In this case tucking it in to the skirt shows off the draping across the front. I layered on a long gem necklace from Stella and Dot (Chelsea). The wristlet and shoes are both a dusty gray colour which is also seen in the pattern of the top. I also like that the studs on the wristlet play on the edginess of the skirt.
Pleated skirts can be styled to be flirty and feminine or edgy and sexy. These two looks are great examples of those two styles!
There are two days left of the Spring Trend Series!
Happy Spring Shopping Everyone!
Spring Trend Series Day 2 – Geometric Prints
For Day 2 of the Spring Trend Series I chose geometric prints. Large geometric prints were all over the runways for the upcoming season. There were so many ways the trend was seen. Strictly shapes, tribal influences or with the hemlines or cutouts on the garment itself.
Preen by Thornton Bregazzi
The prints can be intricate or more subdued. I chose a maxi skirt which also incorporates the Black and White colour trend for the season. It has a tribal influence and a really cool feel to it. I got it from Target for $17.99.
The first of the two ways I could wear this trend would be a casual, cool look.
I chose a flowy tank, for those warmer spring days. It is a Talula tank from Aritzia. It is so unbelievably comfortable and was perfect for this outfit with its olive green colour and stamp print. I chose a strapped wedge to add some colour and a woven envelope clutch. It also has a geometric print with a tribal feel to tie in with the skirt. Lastly I put a simple tan and brown fedora hat. I personally love fedoras for beachy or casual looks like this. They look great with a wavy hairstyle or a messy low bun.
This is a look that will transition into summer well and is perfect for a sunny day outing.
The second look is more dressy casual, perfect for a Spring party or for a night out for some cocktails on the patio.
I added a soft pink silk blouse from Aritzia. It has simple and delicate features but adds a pop of colour. The hemline is also nice because it skims the body and can act as a crop top.
Layer on a lon pendant necklace and a simple wristlet. This one is from Ann Taylor and is a woven straw with black patent leather trim. To dress it up some more these Nine West strappy heels. The cutouts and detailing add their own geometric feel to the outfit.
Three days to go for the Spring Trend Series with so many more stylish outfits and affordable pieces to add to your wardrobe.
Spring Trend Series Day 1 – Shine in Sequins
Spring is approaching quickly which means its time to update the wardrobe with some new fashion trends!
There are so many trends popping up for this Spring but there are a few I chose to highlight and try. Over the next 5 days I will show you what these upcoming trends are, where you can find the pieces I bought and how to incorporate them into wearable outfits for everyday!
The first trend is sequins. This was seen all over the runways for many new Spring lines.
Adding some sparkle to your wardrobe doesn’t have to be costly or as intimidating as some of these pieces may be. It can be worn for day-to-day outings and even to the office. I found a beautiful sequin pencil skirt from Target for $24.99 that makes this trend 100% affordable.
It is a form fitting skirt that has an intricate design in the sequins. I love the wispiness of the sequin detailing that gives this skirt even more appeal.
Two ways I could wear this would be the give it structure and incorporate some colour.
I paired the skirt with a white sleeveless blouse with gold metallic buttons from H&M. As well as a blush pink blazer from Forever 21. Both of these items I pulled from my closet. The blush pink, which is also a huge colour for Spring, I chose to soften the sequin skirt and tie in to complete a professional, fun look.
Pair with a classic pump, such as these Geox heels, and a long strap purse to create a stylish outfit for work.
The second look for this would be a more classic and traditional style.
Taking a classic button down shirt, such as this Ralph Lauren one, and pairing it with the sequin skirt is an easy way to make it more casual. Wrapping on a soft scarf adds one more layer to this Spring time look.
I would pair this with a pair of simple wedge and a structured bag.
Sequin doesn’t have to be something you can only wear out as evening wear. It can easily be used for business attire and makes transferring from day to night incredibly easy!
That’s Day 1 of 5 of my Spring Trend Series! Check back in tomorrow for some new ideas to add to your looks for this Spring!
Preppy style has always been one of my favourite looks to choose because it involves classic colours and prints that are so easy to dress up or down. I wanted to share what I wore today because it has so many preppy elements that I love and are stylish for spring!
I started with a super cute 3/4 length sweater from J Crew. I saw this in the store and held it for so long and decided not to get it because it was pretty pricey. I ended up coming across it at the outlet store for half the price! This doesn’t always happen but I was so glad it did!
This sweater is perfect for breezy weather, which we are getting into since spring is approaching. It is a classic navy blue with nude polka dots. The peter pan collar and loose cuffs are made out of silk for a feminine detail. Lastly a zipper a 1/4 way down the back is a nice finishing touch.
I paired it with a grey and navy blue striped skirt. It is made out of a cotton sweater material so it is extremely comfortable. It is also warmer which is nice!
This skirt was an absolute steal! I got it from The Gap outlet for under $10! I wear it a lot during the winter months since it is so cozy and so basic.
To dress it up with some more prep I added some classic and fun accessories.
I chose a brown leather and gold Michael Kors watch. This style watch is timeless and great for casual outfits or business attire.
I chose a couple simple gold band rings and a midi anchor ring that I bought from a website called Lily Pily. I have a few of their midi rings and absolutely love them. The plain gold bands I got as an assorted size pack from H&M so I can layer rings on both hands. The necklace to the right is a long strand of gold chains that I got from Banana Republic. It is delicate and adds a light layer with this look.
Lastly I put a mixed metallic beaded headband on. There is a beaded bow which made it an obvious choice with this preppy outfit!
I wore a heather grey pair of stockings and a pair of tan suede booties to finish off this look! And that is what I wore today!
Prep on everyone!
Pretty in Peplum
I fell in love the second I saw this sweater at Anthropologie. It is delicate and feminine and has so many details in the stitching. It has a coziness in it you’d find in a classic sweater but the peplum hemline adds some modern flare. Plus it accentuates the waistline and creates an hourglass shape which is flattering for many body types.
The detailed panels on the front and back are not only beautiful, with tiny pompoms and a few clear sequence, but they create the illusion of a smaller frame. Finally there is a sweet button on the back that I love! So simple but so pretty!
I chose to wear a plain black skirt from H&M and black stockings. I really wanted to make my peplum sweater the star of the outfit!
For my accessories I went to mixing metallic and leather accents.
My leather bracelets were a handmade gift. They are so simple and go with almost anything. They are also great for layering! I wear them all year, even though they feature typically summer charms, because I love nautical designs too much to wear them only one season a year. My ring is from Stella and Dot and my watch is Michael Kors and has a mother of pearl face. I chose a leather strap necklace that has a large silver pendant and a small gold charm, also from Stella and Dot, now discontinued.
I put a rosette clip in my hair that is from Anthropologie.
I wore black suede booties with a leather strap, to tie in with my leather jewellery. The booties are from Target and may still be on sale! I finished the outfit with a nude Longchamp bag. This is my go-to bag for work because it is so durable yet sleek and stylish.
That is my Pretty in Peplum look for today!
Night Out Attire
After a long couple days of crafting and prepping for the Superbowl this Sunday (expect some new recipes tomorrow!) I have a night out to get ready for! Tonight i’ll be heading into the city for a birthday celebration so I picked out a trendy outfit with glitzy accessories.
One of my favourite trends is the peter pan collar. Its adds femininity to a button down blouse or in this case is a sweet feature for this light and flowy top.
This top I especially love because it has so many details. there is the black lace peek-a-booing from underneath the collar. The bow is a cute feature that accentuates the neckline and on the back of the top is a sheer panel with buttons in a lovely floral print. This adds some sexiness without having to show too much skin. All the details make this top cute from the front or back. This top is from Lauren Conrad’s line at Kohls. It is inexpensive and features feminine prints, pastel colours and really cute trendy pieces.
I wanted to layer in something a little edgy overtop as opposed to a simple cardigan. So I chose my Mackage by Aritzia leather motorcycle jacket. This is a serious investment piece but the quality of the leather is phenomenal and the style is timeless.
Another one of my favourite trends is pairing dusty pink colours with rich burgundies. It is a surprising colour combination that works extremely well. I chose my burgundy H&M back to basics mini skirt. It is only $6.95 and this style comes in so many great colours that I have a ton of them in my wardrobe.
I chose a pair of black stockings with a white dot pattern and a black suede wedge bootie to finish the outfit. I love printed stockings because they make a cool accessory to an outfit and are a new way to add more prints or colour. Mine are from Target which has the greatest selection of coloured, textured and printed stockings. My booties were a gift from France (ooh la la!), and I especially love them because when paired with a dark legging or stocking they elongate the leg and are extremely comfortable.
With my outfit finished it is time to accessorize! I chose simple pieces that mix glitz, gold metallics and glossy black finishes.
My hair pin (far left) is from Anthropologie which has so many great hair accessories that look as if they could be vintage. My watch is from Michael Kors, a designer known for producing top quality watches. This watch has a glossy black finish with gold ticks on the face. My golden arrow bangle and sparkle necklace are both from Stella and Dot. This is a California based company, who also design the jewellery for Banana Republic, that has beautiful jewellery and accessories.
Thats my weekend night out look for tonight. Try out some of these trends next time have a night out on the town!
Balancing an Outfit
When I am piecing together an outfit I like to mix styles. This could be masculine and feminine, dressy and casual, neutral and bright or splurge and bargain pieces. Today I opted for a little of all of these to create a casual and cool look. I started with a cream and navy polka dot blouse that I got at Target on the clearance rack! It adds a cute, feminine print to my outfit and was a serious bargain. I layered on a splurge piece, my navy Aritzia Talula blazer. I love blazers because they can add structure to a look and dress up almost anything. This one is a cotton blend so it is more casual then the traditional blazer. Splurging on a blazer is definitely worth it because they will last and can be worn for any occasion. So splurge away!
I added a little glitz and colour with my Kate Spade gem pendant necklace. The gold and the turquoise work really well with all the dark blues I am wearing. And with a splurge like Kate Spade you definitely want to make that piece pop!
To finish my outfit I wore a pair of trouser pants that are a mix of grey and olive colour, from The Gap. They have a relaxed leg adding to the casual, comfort of the outfit. Lastly are my tan suede booties with a brown leather strap and buckle. These I got for $12 at Target! I have them in black too because I loved them so much and I wear them all the time. Best $12 I ever spent!
Creating a great look is easy by effectively balancing the styles you put together!
Have a fabulously stylish day!
